Spring 2009

Johann was one of 300 Air Force JROTC cadets that participated in the qualifying postal match last November. Of those, 31 were selected to compete for the National Championship at Camp Perry Ohio, 19-21 Feb, the Headquarters of the Civilian Marksmanship Program and the home of all National Rifle matches in the United States. After two days of firing, Johann found himself in third place with a score of 1063. After posting the highest score (91.4)in the Finals, he moved up to 2nd place and was presented the Silver Medal at tonight's Awards Banquet. Johann will now represent the Air Force JROTC and Monroe Area High School at the All Service JROTC National Air Rifle Championships 26-28 Mar, at Fort Benning. AFJROTC GA-956 now has a team competing in the Georgia High School Association Riflery Program. A first in unit history.   Georgia is one of the few states where Riflery is a varsity sport. There are 124 schools throughout the state that compete.

Riflery is Olympic style 3 position (prone, stand, kneeling) air rifle target shooting. All shooters must pass a rifle safety course approved by the Civilian Marksmanship Program and sign a Safety Pledge before they’re allowed on the rifle range.

The Riflery/Marksmanship Program teaches students self control, focus and concentration. Good shooters make good students due to these traits. Riflery is a sport where size and gender do not matter. There are no born shooters. Anyone can be a good shooter with dedication and practice.

There are two categories of Riflery, sporter and precision. Sporter is a little less accurate and a much less expensive rifle while Precision is a more accurate rifle enhanced by the special clothing required.

GHSA Riflery is considered Open Class. Competitors may use either sporter or precision equipment.

The AFJROTC GA-956 Rifle Team is not funded by the Walton County BOE or the Air Force. With seed money from the Air Force JROTC Program and private contributions, we have put together the equipment to outfit a basic 5 member sporter team and build a portable 10 position rifle range. This has allowed the training of many cadets in rifle safety and marksmanship.

Our immediate need and goal is to acquire a more accurate sporter rifle and the associated equipment for the 5 member competitive team and retain our current equipment for training new shooters for the future.  This would help level the playing field between us and the other schools in the state. The cost of the new sporter equipment is $6500.00.

Our long term goal for the program is to move up to the Precision category. That will be a more expensive project that will be an ongoing process for years to come.
